Guitarist and singer Jason Walsmith of the Nadas will perform solo at the Mill along with Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts at 10 p.m. today. Admission is $10.

Walsmith’s love for music began at a young age, when he regularly sang for his school and church choirs. He picked up the guitar late in high school and quickly grew to love the instrument.

“My desire to perform guitar outpaced my ability to learn other people’s songs, so I started writing my own,” Walsmith said.

His solo music, which he describes as “corn-fed folk,” includes a mix of tunes recorded by the Nadas along with some of Walsmith’s favorite cover songs. Unlike performances with all five members of the band, his individual shows allow him to give audience members more background information on each song and allow extra practice when the band isn’t performing.

“I am free to improvise a little and break the rules of my own songs,” Walsmith said.

For him, musical inspiration comes from a variety of outlets, including movies, dreams, and overheard conversations. He has kept a handful of songs that have not been recorded by the Nadas and hopes to one day create a solo record.
