The Iowa City Community Theatre will present The Nerd at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4261 Oak Crest Hill Road. The show will run through March13, starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on March 13. Admission prices range from $10 to $18.

The two act comedy, written by Larry Shue, tells the story of architect Willum Cubbert. The Indiana resident seems to have everything going for him — a successful career, wife, and home. That is, until, he encounters a visit from Rick, a “nerd.” Rick saved Willum’s life during Vietnam and wrote to him over the years. Willum tells Rick to come to him if he ever needs help, and to his surprise, he receives a response.

Rick and Willum’s involvement in the Vietnam War can be referenced to the playwright’s own life. After graduating with a B.F.A in theater from Illinois Wesleyan University, Shue served three years in the Army. After his service he acted and wrote plays, including The Foreigner, Grandma Duck is Dead, and My Emperor’s New Clothes. Shue’s themes often revolve around mistaken identity and different stereotypical roles.
