Members of the University of Iowa Student Government and UI students met Tuesday to discuss a lobbying trip they’re planning for March 7.

Regent’s Day is scheduled to be held at the Capitol in Des Moines, with nearly 50 UI students expected to attend and speak with Iowa lawmakers, said Lee Henely, the government-relations liaison for UISG.

UISG and the UI Executive Council of Graduate and Professional will focus primarily on the decreases in state appropriations and increasing tuition, he said.

“We need to be sure they understand that all students are unity and feel strongly about these issues,” said UISG President John Rigby.

UI students will be joined by those from the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University.

Henely said UI students will lobby at the Capitol from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by a student-leader press conference at 2 p.m. at which state Board of Regents President David Miles is expected to speak.
