President Obama appointed Gov. Terry Branstad to be a co-chairman of the Council of Governors Tuesday.

The council held its first meeting Tuesday in conjunction with the National Governors Association.

Governors serve two-year terms, and the president designates two members of different political affiliations to serve as the council’s co-leaders, according to a release.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to work on finding solutions that enhance the security of our country,” Branstad said in the release.

Branstad will work with Gen. Tim Orr on matters pertaining to the council.
