A University of Iowa alumna was struck by a semi on Interstate 80 on Tuesday after jumping from an overpass near the 249 interchange, officials said.

Shannon L. Hierseman of rural Iowa City was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a press release from Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek.

The release said the Joint Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday indicating a person had jumped off the Herbert Hoover Highway overpass.

Pulkrabek said Hierseman then fell onto east bound I-80 and was struck by a semi tractor trailer.

Stanley T. Engstrand of Luck, Wis., the driver of the semi, suffered minor injuries but left on his own accord, the release said.

Officials said they believe Hierseman jumped intentionally off the bridge into the path of the semi; an autopsy will be performed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
