The University of Iowa sent 651 people to the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., according to documents obtained through an open-records request.

The figure included 111 football players, 254 band members, and 31 cheerleaders and dancers, among others.

The UI funded the trip for 21 individuals in the official party, including UI President Sally Mason, UI Student Government President John Rigby, Vice President for Student Services Tom Rocklin, and interim Provost P. Barry Butler.

UI spokesman Tom Moore said the final expense report for the bowl is still being prepared, but he could not pinpoint a release date. Transportation and lodging were the main expenses, he said.

The UI spent nearly $1.9 million for the Orange Bowl in January 2010 and took in a $1.95 million payout.
