The No. 30 Iowa women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 25 Illinois on Sunday in Atlanta. The Fighting Illini beat the Hawkeyes, 5-2, in the consolation match of the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Season Kickoff.

Junior Sonja Molnar and senior Jessica Young beat the No. 15 doubles duo in the No. 1 spot, 9-7.
Molnar, ranked 70th in singles, took down Illinois’ Breanne Smutko (6-2, 6-1), and senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei beat Illinois’ Amy Allin (1-6, 6-0, 10-5).

The team dropped its first match of the season the previous day, falling to No. 13 Georgia Tech, 5-2.
Molnar was defeated by Georgia Tech’s Viet Ha Ngo at the No. 1 spot in singles (6-1, 6-0). The two freshmen, Jessica Cohen and Christina Harazin, took home the only singles victories for Iowa in the fifth and sixth spots.

The two losses brought the women’s record to 1-2 on the season.

Georgia Tech beat South Florida, 4-2, on Sunday to clinch the invitational title.
