Think about MopedU before zipping around towns

First of all, I would like to compliment the individuals behind MopedU for their creativity and ingenuity. But after reading the article in the Jan. 27 Daily Iowan, I have some serious reservations with this business venture.

According to the state of Iowa, there is no additional education or training required for new moped users beyond what is completed for a regular driver’s license. If people rent a moped from MopedU, they are going to be far more vulnerable to serious injuries from poor driving decisions made by them or other drivers on the roads around them. Is MopedU going to provide tutorials on how to avoid these dangerous driving situations? Like many others, I drive across campus and downtown on a daily basis, and I see far too many poor decisions by people running late for class and business professionals trying to make it to work on time. If these poor, and sometimes selfish, driving decisions are combined with roughly 250 inexperienced moped users, that’s a recipe for some disastrous situations.

I am by no means saying that this is inevitable or that it is the fault of the new moped users, but without proper education and enforcement of moped regulations, the opportunity for accidents that involve serious injuries will go up exponentially.
