The University of Iowa Van Allen Hall and Biology Building East were evacuated Jan. 28 following a gas leak, according to a university press release.

The release said the building was evacuated for around an hour after a private contract worker accidentally pierced a natural-gas line between the buildings.

No one was injured in the incident, and the buildings were reopened shortly after 9 a.m.

Natural-gas service to both buildings — typically used to feed Bunsen burners — is temporarily unavailable until the gas line is repaired and retested, the release said.
