A member of the Iowa City Fire Department spoke to the Iowa City City Council Tuesday night, criticizing city budget cuts, which would eliminate one firefighter position.

Capt. Eric Nurnberg, who represents the firefighters’ union, asked the councilors to think before they decided on the cut, which would eliminate the captain of inspections.

Numberg said that the department had received 41 comments from more than 70 stakeholders that were related to inadequate staffing. He also said the department’s staffing isn’t consistent with Iowa City’s growth.

He also noted the “counterproductivity” of eliminating a position at the same time as adding others.
