The Iowa House voted to adopt a GOP amendment Wednesday that would cap the cost of tuition at the state’s public universities.

Representatives voted on Wednesday to adopt an amendment drafted by Jeff Kaufmann, R-Wilton, that would bar the state Board of Regents from increasing tuition and fees by more than 4 percent.

“This is an attempt to make sure any de-appropriation is not passed on to tuition increases for our students,” Kaufmann said.

The amendment does not include language for a potential cap on room and board, but Kaufmann said he would be willing to include it if the amendment survives a Senate vote.
