Coralville man charged with assault

A Coralville man was arrested after allegedly beating his girlfriend unconscious on Jan. 15.

Rudolph Edwards, 40, was charged with domestic assault and willful injury causing serious injury.

According to police reports, Coralville police responded to 938 Boston Way following a report of an injured female. Officers said the woman was incoherent.

Police said the alleged victim’s roommate told officers the woman and the defendant were arguing.

The roommate looked outside and said she saw the woman unconscious on the ground as Edwards walked away.

Edwards reportedly told police “she hit me with a phone, and I just blacked out.”

The victim was taken to the hospital and needed surgery.

Willful injury causing serious injury is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine. Third and subsequent domestic assault is a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum $7,500 fine.
