At the time of former receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos' arrest, the team had coincidentally been performing drug tests of its own. Following his arrest, any drug tests that were issued were not out of the ordinary. The Hawkeyes began their own drug testing, in addition to NCAA and Big Ten testing, in 1988. The internal testing system costs $70,000 each year to maintain.
