Aug. 30, 2003 — For the third-straight season, Iowa faced Miami (Ohio). Hawkeye running back Fred Russell ran for 161 yards, Iowa quarterback Nathan Chandler tossed two touchdowns, and Redhawk signal-caller Ben Roethlisberger threw four interceptions as Iowa defeated Miami, 21-3.

Aug. 31, 2002 — The Hawkeyes scored a school-record 37 points in the first quarter, going on to beat Akron, 57-21. It was senior quarterback Brad Banks' first career start for Iowa. Banks completed 5-of-8 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Sept. 1, 2001 — Iowa set the tone for a strong season by dominating Kent State, 51-0. Hawkeye kicker Nate Kaeding's 15 kicking points broke former Iowa placekicker Rob Houghtlin's record for kicking points in a game. Also, running back Aaron Greving tied an NCAA record by scoring touchdowns on three consecutive carries.

Sept. 3, 1987 — A future Hawkeye is born — Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi. The Hawkeye signal caller is 18-4 in his career as a starter. Stanzi ranks sixth all-time in Iowa history in career passing yards (4,373) and passing touchdowns (31).

Sept. 4, 1999 — No. 5 Nebraska traveled to Kinnick Stadium to face the Hawkeyes in Kirk Ferentz's first game ever as Iowa head coach. The Huskers, who went on to win the Fiesta Bowl, blew the Hawkeyes away, 42-7. Iowa finished the season with only one victory, the worst season ever under Ferentz.
