Brands named Big Ten Icon No. 50
The Big Ten Network announced Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands as one of its top 50 "Big Ten Icons" on Thursday.
The program will continue to count down the best 50 student-athletes in conference history according to their playing careers.
Brands was a four-time All-American and three-time NCAA champion as a Hawkeye 134-pounder from 1989-92, recording a 158-7-2 career record. He also was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1992 NCAA championships.
"It is an honor to be selected as part of such an exclusive and competitive group of athletes," he said in a release Thursday.
Brands, along with No. 49 — Penn State volleyball player Megan Hodge — kicked off the countdown. The network will continue to unveil icons through No. 21 between now and Sept. 16 at www.BigTenIcons.com.
The countdown's accompanying TV show will début Sept. 18, when host Keith Jackson will unveil the No. 20 icon, and it will continue every Tuesday night into next spring.
