General manager of Coral Ridge Mall Old Country Buffet arrested
Police have arrested the general manager of the Coral Ridge Mall Old Country Buffett and charged him with first-degree theft.
The manager reportedly stole nearly $20,000 from the establishment and lost it gambling.
Andrew Vernia, 31, failed to deposit nine company deposits over nine days, according to police reports.
He allegedly lost the money when he used it to gamble at Jumer’s Casino in Rock Island. He told police that after winning at the casino, he planned to make the deposits and use the winnings for personal expenses. The defendant was never given permission to use the money for any purpose, police say.
First-degree theft is a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of at least $1,000.
