Local authorities arrested two men for allegedly driving drunk.

Brian Cowles, 48, and Alexander Bessenecker, 30, were both charged with third-offense OWI. Bessenecker was also charged with driving while revoked.

According to Iowa City police reports, officers responded to a report of an intoxicated person and saw Cowles get into a van and leave. Police stopped him and said had a strong odor of alcoholic beverages on his breath, bloodshot and watery eyes, slow and slurred speech, poor balance, and he admitted to drinking before driving.

Cowles refused breath tests and failed two field-sobriety tests.

Coralville police stopped Bessenecker for speeding, authorities said. He was allegedly wearing a bar band, smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, and admitted to drinking.

Bessenecker refused several field-sobriety tests and breath tests, police said.

Third-offense OWI is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $9,375.
