Iowa City police arrested an Iowa City woman for a string of 10 burglaries that began April 14.

Laurent Craig, 30, 419 S. Johnson St., was charged Sunday with second-degree burglary, second-degree attempted burglary, third-degree burglary, a controlled-substance violation with intent to deliver, possession of prescription drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and interference with official acts.

Around 11:30 p.m. on April 17, Craig returned to an apartment she’d burglarized two days before, police said. When confronted by the occupants of the residence, she claimed to be looking for “Kyle,” police reports show.

The alleged victim recognized his hat and backpack, which Craig was wearing, and Craig fled the apartment, authorities said. The alleged victim followed her while calling police on his cell phone.
Craig jumped into Ralston Creek but officers were able to arrest her, police reports show.

When she was arrested, Craig allegedly possessed drugs and drug-related items with her along with ID, credit, and debit cards that had been stolen in other burglaries. She told officers she committed the burglaries while looking for items, primarily laptops, she could trade for crack-cocaine.

According to Iowa City police, there have been 10 robberies near downtown Iowa City since April 14 in which electronics and credit and debit cards have been stolen. In the few occasions the suspect was confronted by residents, she claimed to be looking for someone she believed lived there.

Craig is a suspect in additional burglary investigations and more charges may be filed, police said.
Second-degree burglary, the most serious charge in this case, is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
