Proceed with caution

The concern felt by Wickham Elementary parents and others over the latest redistricting proposal of sending Wickham students and Lincoln Elementary students to City High and Southeast Junior High is very understandable. This is based on very real traffic concerns.

Given that projected capacity figures for West High indicate a bulge from 2010 to 2012 and a reduction from 2012 to 2014, then another bulge in 2014, it would seem logical to have a third high school in place by the fall of 2014. In the meantime, perhaps Wickham students could remain at North Central Junior High for another year when absolutely necessary but continue to the high school finally designated.

A decision about a third high school must be made even if it cannot be built in the near future. It is not reasonable to have students moved around like pawns. The cities involved must cooperate in planning for the whole area and not operate as impartial entities. As it is, some students in North Liberty are choosing to go to Solon because of distance.

The whole premise for the redistricting proposals is not an accurate barometer for the elementary schools, because the economy is affecting all sections of the population. Hopefully, it will change as the economy picks up. In the meantime the district should not lose the federal funding that it currently receives — and needs. This redistricting process should proceed very cautiously and should wait where possible for the arrival of the new superintendent.
