Police arrested a Coralville man with previous drug convictions Monday.

Demetrius Bledsoe, 28, Coralville, was charged with third-offense possession of a controlled substance.

According to Iowa City police, Bledsoe was driving without headlights or a functioning brake lights after sunset. His driver’s license showed barred status for being a habitual offender and was revoked for previous drug offenses, police said.

Bledsoe consented to a search after officers stopped him, then allegedly attempted to conceal a bag of marijuana. The bag reportedly fell to the ground in front of the officer.

Police reportedly noticed a smell of alcohol on Bledsoe, who allegedly admitted smoking marijuana approximately 15 minutes prior to driving.

He has several prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance, including most recently on May 21, 2008.

Third-offense or greater possession of a controlled substance is a Class D felony generally punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of up to $7,500.
