Police arrested an Iowa City man after he allegedly struck a bar employee with a handgun.

Michael Johnson, 31, 2153 Keokuk St., was charged Feb. 19 with assault causing bodily injury after an alleged incident at the Juice Box, 1921 Keokuk St., at roughly 4 a.m.

According to police reports, Johnson was asked to leave Juice Box — known as Los Cocos under previous ownership — because of violent behavior.

He allegedly returned and demanded to be let in. When some employees refused, Johnson took out a black handgun and hit an employee on the head with the gun’s handle, police said.

The strike allegedly caused swelling and a small amount of bleeding. Johnson reportedly fled the scene after the incident.

Police also charged Johnson with simple assault after a seemingly unrelated incident at the Juice Box on Sunday.

Assault causing bodily injury is a serious misdemeanor generally punishable by up to a year in prison and a maximum fine of up to $1,875.
