The Iowa men’s golf team downed Minnesota on Feb. 13 to finish third in the second Big Ten Match-Play Championships in Coral Springs, Fla.

Falling to eventual champion Northwestern, 3.5-2.5, in the semifinals, the Hawkeyes later beat the Golden Gophers, 3.5-2.5, to end with a 2-1 tournament record.

Sophomores Brad George, Chris Brant, and Barrett Kelpin managed 2.5 points for Iowa, with George and Kelpin capturing one team point apiece.

Brant finished his individual matchup all square and earned a half-point.

“After a close loss in the morning, it’s a tough situation to come back and work for third place,” Iowa head coach Mark Hankins said in a statement. “But the guys took it upon themselves to win their individual matches rather than worry about the team win. I thought we did a good job in the afternoon of battling, and our hard work resulted in a win and a third place finish.”

Northwestern downed Purdue, 6-0. All six individual matches were decided on the final holes.

No. 35 Iowa will take to the link on March 6 in Dallas for the Black and Gold Alumni Match on March 6.
