An Iowa City man was charged Wednesday after allegedly committing his 11th OWI.

Herbert Mather, 48, 1212 1/2 Highland Court, was charged with third-offense OWI after Iowa City police officers reportedly found him intoxicated and attempting to drive a truck that was stuck.

According to police, Mather admitted to drinking beer before getting in the truck, but he said he had not had anything to drink since he started driving.

Mather allegedly showed slurred speech and stated he was drunk. He refused to have his blood-alcohol level tested.

Reportedly, Mather has two prior third-offense OWI convictions, the most recent on Dec. 1, 2005.
OWI with at least three prior convictions is a Class D felony generally punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of up to $9, 375.
