Reject sanctuary city
I am so disappointed in the story about the possibility of Iowa City becoming a sanctuary city (“Committee: Make Iowa City immigrant sanctuary,” Jan. 21). I was born and raised in Iowa, and I am flabbergasted at the lack of respect for the laws of our country in considering Iowa City for such a designation.
What has happened to the values of the Iowans I knew? I know it has been a rough winter. Perhaps you have been infiltrated by the “progressives” who don’t think that any laws pertain to them and, obviously, to those who enter our country illegally.
Why not help the illegals become legal instead of fighting for rights which they are not entitled to? What “rights” would you have if you entered another country illegally? You would be breaking the law and would be punished — and rightly so. Geography doesn’t change the rule of law.

The good of Dance Marathon
I would like to applaud The Daily Iowan for publishing the Feb. 5 article “Happy ceremony for 7-year-old.” In times of a struggling economy, tuition surcharges, and university official bonuses, it’s a relief to read a compelling story of a young Iowa boy and his family that have overcome a rare and deadly cancer.
The importance of Dance Marathon and how the student volunteers affect these families in trying times cannot be overstated. Hopefully, this story will help people realize the good Dance Marathon provides for families in our community and in eastern Iowa. The article about Jason O’Neill and his family provided a ray of light on an otherwise dreary day.
Reporter Emily Busse should be commended for an exceptional article, as well as the editor who chose to run her story as front-page news. It’s nice to read a heartwarming story of this magnitude during today’s economy. Well done, DI.
