Anti-Israel bias

In a Jan. 26 letter, Jessica Brock wrote, “As long as a country [Israel] has discriminatory marriage laws and denies basic commodities to legal Bedouin communities, the international community will always hold that nation legally accountable.”

In part, Brock cites an organization called Human Rights Watch to back up her claims. Despite the noble-sounding name, the group has been found to be highly biased against Israel by NGO Monitor, which monitors nongovernmental organizations.

No less than the founder of Human Rights Watch, Robert Bernstein, has been highly critical of the group’s anti-Israel bias and its neglect of human-rights violations in closed societies. In many predominately Muslim countries, gays not only do not have the right of marriage, they are tortured and murdered simply for the “crime” of being gay. A woman can be beaten for the “crime” of using Twitter to innocuously tell the world what she ate for lunch, as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton recently discovered. Rape victims (including prepubescent girls) can be murdered for the “crime” of violating the family honor. Muslims who dare convert to another religion can be put to death for the “crime” of choosing freedom of religion.

Israel should, of course, be no less accountable for its actions than any other country. However, by ignoring grievous human-rights violations in other nations and citing organizations that have been independently found to be anti-Israel, the letter writer is practicing the same brand of bias she so vehemently rails against.
