I support Cardella

In response to the Dec. 8 point/counterpoint alleging that Lori Cardella’s tactics and motives in leading the petition drive were suspect — that is not true in any way. If your writer had actually spoken to a member of the Republican Party, you would have known the truth — not parroted Democrat smears.

Lori is an excellent candidate, but she had no intention to run and was gathering signatures based on her firm conviction that an elected position should be filled by election — not partisan favoritism.

An excellent minority candidate applied for the position and was intending to run in the special election. His name is Edgar Thornton. He has more than 20 years of senior state and federal government experience, is a graduate of the local Chamber of Commerce leadership program, and a former senior manager at Kirkwood Community College. He would have been a strong voice for minorities, students, rural citizens, and low-income people in Johnson County and should have been appointed. Unfortunately, the letter after his name is an “R,” not a “D.”

Cardella was one of those strongly encouraging Thornton to run. Unfortunately, he could not run a short, intense campaign in December and January, because his current work and family schedules prove an insurmountable conflict. He intends to run in the 2010 regular election.

Cardella stepped up to the plate, offering her time and skills to Johnson County citizens — and she’s hitting a home run. Her complete focus has been on the right to vote — as she told students and others when asking for their signatures. She did not lie or mislead. These nasty smears are what we expect from the Democrats any time their 100 percent control of government is challenged.

However, we expect better from the UI students and their newspaper editorial writers. I encourage all UI students and employees to not fall for these slanderous slurs and underhanded tactics and take a serious look at Cardella’s opinions and qualifications. She will make an excellent county supervisor and bring much-needed change and diversity of opinion and view to the board. My husband and I wholeheartedly support her.
