Iowa City police arrested a man after he allegedly fought with a peace officer while being arrested for theft.

Darryl Marcel Henry, 18, 1401 Franklin St., was charged with three counts of third-degree burglary from an unoccupied vehicle, assault on a police officer, and interference with official acts causing injury.

On Nov. 13 a police officer reportedly found Henry inside a Ford Taurus at 520 S. Johnson St. and flashed his lights on him, telling him not to move, according to police reports. Henry then started to run from the car, police said.

When the officer caught up to Henry, he started to fight with the officer, pushing him and swinging at the officer with balled fists. Henry then managed to get loose during the fight and started running again.

Two officers caught Henry and placed him in handcuffs. During the fight, the officer sprained his thumb and had to seek medical help for chest tightness.

Assault on a peace officer is a Class D felony and is generally punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $7,500.
