Iowa City School Board members approved their list of four redistricting priorities on Tuesday, after making slight wording changes.

Board members will present the non-ranked priorities — enrollment considerations, operational costs, demographics, and neighborhood-related concerns — to the boundary-change committee, which will meet on Nov. 18.

Board members also approved their charge for the committee, which stated members should consider the four priorities and the community’s best interest, address high-school enrollment concerns, consider redistricting impact to all grade levels, and produce two or three potential scenarios for redistricting.

The public can attend the meeting and submit written questions for committee consideration. Meetings will also be televised through the Iowa City School District, said Superintendant Lane Plugge, and officials are looking into broadcasting from city channels as well.

Members of the public have said that they want to be as involved as possible with the redistricting process in the coming months.

Officials are still sorting out some committee-related details. A list of committee members will likely be complete by the end of the week, said Plugge.

Two School Board members, Tuyet Dorau and Mike Cooper, will have limited roles on the committee. They will be present to guide discussion but not to participate in decision-making, board members said.

“[They] should participate when needed, not when [they’ve] got something to say,” said board member Sarah Swisher.

Board members said their involvement with the committee should be limited to giving basic information when necessary, as they don’t want to sway its recommendation.

Some district administrators will be present to help guide the committee as well, officials said.
