Today
• Keep your wallet happy — have a coupon-friendly feast. The bevy of free coupon books available around Iowa City provide discounts on pizza, sandwiches, Chinese food, drinks, and more. You don’t have to spend like a king to dine like one.
• The Book of Liz, the UI theater department’s current Mainstage play, was penned by siblings Amy and David Sedaris. Familiarize yourself with the dynamic duo’s writing — check out the former’s guide to entertaining I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence or the latter’s comedic memoirs (try the books Barrel Fever and Naked). Laughter is guaranteed.
Friday
• Start preparing your Halloween costume. In the spirit of this weekend’s Zombie Prom opening, buy some fake blood and cut up old clothes to zombie-fy your Halloween attire. For something cleaner — and more lively — try any sort of animal or Disney character.
• Play a board game. It may seem nerdy, but nothing gets your competitive spirit pumping like a good game of Scrabble. If words aren’t your thing, there are games to cover just about any interest, whether that be the super-sleuthing in Clue or the money-laundering of Monopoly.
Saturday
• Go for a run. Temperatures are dropping like Lil’ Wayne tracks, so get one last jog in before it’s too cold to do so. Hit the (non-snow covered) pavement and burn off all the calories you consumed during the week.
• Check out director Ridley Scott’s classic 1979 science-fiction film Alien at the Bijou. The often copied Oscar-winning movie centers on a doomed spaceship crew taken over by a ruthless extraterrestrial and the fierce battle that ensues, led by none other than Sigourney Weaver.
Sunday
• Magician Rob Lake will perform his award-winning illusions at City High School today, but you don’t have to be in attendance to make magic of your own. Learn some simple card or sleight-of-hand tricks, or better yet — find a way to make your homework disappear.
• Make indoor s’mores. Put a marshmallow and a piece of chocolate atop a graham cracker, and place everything in the oven. Bake the concoction for 10 minutes and voilà — the result will taste as though it’s straight from the campfire. No matches necessary.
