DVC wins intramurals Game of the Week

BY MITCH SMITH | SEPTEMBER 23, 2009 7:20 AM

DVC defeated Hollah Till You Pass Out, 21-12, Tuesday night at the Hawkeye Recreation Fields in the first intramural flag-football Game of the Week.

With 45 seconds remaining in the game and trailing by nine, Hollah quarterback James Conway completed a pass to Lakshay Abbott on a fourth down just inches shy of the goal line.

The Hollah players celebrated, yelling that it was definitely a touchdown.

Had it been ruled a touchdown, Hollah could have attempted to tie the game with a three-point conversion.

The officials conferred for a few moments and ruled that Abbott was indeed just short of the end zone, keeping DVC’s undefeated season alive.

The decisive score for DVC came late in the third quarter when quarterback Mike Highland completed a pass to Adam Wronkiewicz, who lateraled back to Highland just before his flags were ripped away by the defense.

The Hollah defense stopped, thinking Wronkiewicz was down, but the play continued, and Hollah watched Highland run uncontested into the end zone.

“I got the ball off in time,” Wronkiewicz said. “That really seemed to be the turning point in the game.”

Hollah was extremely short-handed. The game would have been ruled a forfeit had Abbott not shown up just at the last moment.

With only five players, Hollah players were forced to play on both sides of the ball, while DVC was able to comfortably substitute its 10 players in and out.

“I tip my hat to the players on [Hollah],” said DVC’s Scott Doll, a junior on DVC. “Playing on both sides of the ball is not easy.”

Along with being short-handed, the wet and muddy field conditions made play difficult. Receivers were continually slipping and sliding in the mud, making it hard to complete many passes.

The conditions allowed the DVC defense to shine.

That D was relentless, bringing pressure on nearly every play. Junior Chris Taramelli recorded three sacks, Geoff Wilson had an interception, and the brothers Alex and Nick Puetz added an interception apiece.

Although both offenses struggled, each team had star wideouts that kept the chains moving — Abbott of Hollah and Doll of DVC.

Doll, who wore a red shirt with a pair of hands imprinted on it, was the offensive playmaker for DVC.
“Those hands [on my shirt] were like a target,” he said. “When they give me the ball, I like to make plays. But we all made big plays out there. It wasn’t just me.”

After the game, the DVC players were lobbying for a spot in the intramural top 10 rankings this week, but that is yet to be determined.
