New building hours unfair to studio-art majors
I am a studio-arts major at the UI who is working to be in the B.F.A. program for sculpture. I have a very large problem with the idea that I will not have access to the Studio Arts Building after 10 p.m. (DI, Sept. 9). Most of the work I do (as do others) requires the use of special equipment that I would not have access to outside of the building. Every class I have this semester revolves around studio arts, and all 13 credit hours I have are met through classes at the Studio Arts Building. I practically need to live on campus if I am to complete the projects I will work on for this semester.
I do believe as studio-arts majors we have special needs when it comes to access to our building and equipment. I cannot simply take my project home if I need to cut and weld metal together or use the table saw for a laminated-wood project. We cannot go to a coffee shop or all-night diner to finish projects, as can many other students, who require books to complete assignments.
I do not hold with UI arts Professor Robert Glasgow’s view that we could simply schedule around it and make better use of our time. I will get all the hours in that I can during the allotted time frame, but the work I do will (without a doubt) suffer as a result. So will my undergraduate career, as well as my portfolio. There is a petition hanging in different spots around the Studio Arts Building. I think this is worth mentioning.
Thank you for writing the story, and I hope this is not the last of what gets printed on the issue, because it is a very important one.
