Iowa announces ‘Wear Gold,’ ‘Blackout’ games
The Iowa athletics department has announced the dates for what have now become annual events at Kinnick Stadium — the “Wear Gold” game and the “Blackout” game. And for Hawkeye fans awaiting the two games, the wait will be brief.
Iowa declared its home-opener on Sept. 5 against Northern Iowa as its Wear Gold game. Kickoff for this contest is scheduled for 11 a.m.
This will be the fourth time Iowa has had a Wear Gold game, the idea surfaced in 2006 prior to the Hawkeyes’ game with Ohio State, which entered Iowa City ranked No. 1 nationally. The weekend of the Panther game will also feature the first FryFest celebration.
The Blackout game will be on Sept. 19, when the Hawkeyes host Arizona, which is coached by former Hawkeye player Mike Stoops.
This is the fifth-annual Blackout Iowa has had. Last year, the Hawkeyes beat Iowa State in the contest. Iowa’s game with Arizona has a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in Kinnick.
