Coralville man appeals case

A Coralville man who pleaded guilty to third-degree sexual assault will appeal his case in the Iowa Supreme Court at the state’s expense.

Court records released Monday show a public-appellate defender will take on 25-year-old Javan Geneva’s case.

According to police complaints, Geneva came in contact with the victim at the local Iowa City restaurant where he worked. The heavily intoxicated victim had passed out in the restaurant’s bathroom. Records show Geneva took her back to his home and had sexual intercourse with the victim without her knowledge or consent.

Third-degree sexual assault, a Class C felony, carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. Geneva initially denied the charges, claiming the sex act was consensual.

He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse in March. He was forced to register as a sex offender, jail time, and two years’ probation. In addition, he will spend 10 years under special supervision.
