Letter to the Editor

In the April 14 article “IC’s mean streets,” many of the people quoted complained that police are spending more time in bars giving out PAULAs than on the streets. The police counter by saying “alcohol enforcement goes to the root of the issue.”

That’s true. But what about people who are of age and intoxicated? Being of age doesn’t make you any less likely to get into a fight if you’re intoxicated. If the police want to curb the violence, they should focus more on getting people who are very drunk off the streets.

Alcohol enforcement includes more than preventing underage drinking. It also includes making sure people — regardless of age — are not a danger to themselves or others when they are intoxicated.
