Inept hits the Picador
Chicago-based band Inept will play the Picador, 330 E. Washington St., at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Danger Is My Middle Name, BackDrop, Made Avail, and Worst Case Scenario will open.
Guitarist Kevin Singleton said Inept began during his years in high school, when he and fellow guitarist Lucas Mountain decided to start the band as path to coolness. They put up fliers looking for a singer, and Anthony Lira answered the call. Ian Roberts and Justin Pogue joined in to complete the quintet.
Being based in a city with countless music venues gave Inept places to perform, but Singleton said spreading the band’s sound was best accomplished by touring around the country.
“Chicago has definitely helped us out a lot,” he said. “But at the same time, you can’t just stay in Chicago — you have to branch out to other markets. Just staying in one city isn’t going to help you.”
Inept is touring with rock outfit Trapt, although Inept is making a few stops without it, including the Iowa City show.
“It’s really cool,” Singleton said. “All the shows are pretty much sold out, and it’s really different for us because we’ve always done a do-it-yourself tour.”
The band, which classifies its sound as positive, upbeat rock, grabs its influence from such bands as Jimmy Eat World, Incubus, and Smashing Pumpkins. Although those famous rockers affected Inept, Singleton noted the odd quality of the band sounding different from many of the groups with which it tours.
“A lot of the bands that we get to know on a personal level we don’t sound anything like, which is kind of odd,” he said.
Saturday night’s show won’t be the first time Inept plays Iowa City, but Singleton said he is looking forward to it because of the great experiences he’s had here.
“The March show that we played [at the Picador with Senses Fail] was our best show ever in Iowa City,” Singleton said. “We love Iowa City — it’s really close to home, so we try to hit the city as frequently as possible.”
