Textbook tax exemption out of subcommittee

An Iowa Senate sales-tax exemption bill moved one step closer to reaching the floor for debate, passing out of subcommittee Thursday morning.

The bill would provide a sales tax-exemption on textbooks for individuals who present a valid college ID. While such supporters as Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, tout the measure as a way to help struggling students, they’ve remained cautious.

“I think we have significant financial issues in putting together the state budget, and I think we’re going to pay attention to that,” said Bolkcom, who was on the bill’s subcommittee. “We’ll just to have to see where this falls in. We’ll have to see if there are resources for this.”

Two similar bills are under consideration in the House.

The measure has until the March 13 funnel deadline to pass out of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
